Pip looks at the convict freeing himself from the iron on his leg.
While the convict looks much the same as in Chapter I, Pip looks a little bit different everytime I draw him.
When I recollect this picture I always immagine it to look horrible, but on a closer look
it’s actually aceptable. The scene plays in a foggy cemetry at the rising of the morning
sun. Pip looks stealthily from a shadow of a high family tombstone, while playing with
his only button on his coat. The prisoner is lying on his back and files away at his ironed
leg without ceremony.
Little details: Behind Pip’s right foot the inscription says: ”memento quia pulvis es
et in pulverem reverteris”, remember that you’re dust and to to dust you will decay.
This same tombstone shows a family tree.
