Great Expectations Illustrations: Chapter XVII

About Charles Dickens's Great Expectations

The story is based in pre-Victorian England and follows the journey of
Pip, a boy who starts as a humble apprentice at his uncle‘s forge in a
village in Kent while being mocked by the rich Miss Havisham and her
haughty ward Estella for his commonness. He later surprisingly
becomes heir to a vast fortune from a mysterious benefactor. He then
pursues to learn the ways of a gentleman in London, accompanied by
his good friend Herbert, by the fearsome lawyer Mr. Jaggers and many
more, and approaches step by step the truth about his fortune, which
in the end will place him before the question, whether to remain a
gentleman or go back to his humble roots.
