Chapter LVII

Size: 48 cm x 36 cm

The picture shows Joe bringing Pip out of his home at the Temple in London and into a carriage waiting outside. He is taking him out to get some fresh air on a ride through the countryside.

After the foiled attempt to help the convict Magwitch escape England in March, followed by Magwitch’s imprisonment and death, Pip falls ill with a fever. While he is delirious, debt collectors come to arrest him, but soon give up due to his poor condition. His illness worsens, and he remembers only shifting shapes, passing and going, gradually transforming more and more into his uncle Joe.

One day, Pip comes to his senses and notices Joe sitting beside him. The estranged pair begin to converse, at first formally, but soon freely and without restraint. Joe tells him how Biddy sent him to Pip, about Miss Havisham’s demise, the settlement of her will, and Orlick’s imprisonment after breaking into Mr. Pumblechook’s shop.

At the beginning of June, when Pip has mostly recovered from his fever, Joe orders an open carriage to take him on a ride through the countryside. Laden with affection, Joe helps the weakened Pip down the stairs and into the waiting two-seater.

The picture is drawn on 200 g/cm³ paper with various inks. It took me almost two years to return to the habit of drawing Great Expectations, primarily due to moving to France for my PhD, which is now drawing to an end, and also to running into a creative “bottleneck” for new illustration ideas.
